Did he really attempt suicide or was he attacked?

Answer: he hurt himself because he realizes no help is coming from trump or anyone else, and he wants to be moved to another jail. He doesn't like the conditions of the one he's in (as stated in the news) and reality is beginning to set in that he'll rot there for the rest of his life. He's desperate. Also, his life is probably in danger if he was granted bail at this point. Russia particularly would make sure he died in a not at all suspicious accident. Either way he's fucked.

Is the protective order in the Epstein case an attempt to shut down the investigation?

No, they're very much working on it. There's a lot to investigate, and there's a lot of sick shit involving kids. If the American people learned about it now, it probably would damage an ongoing investigation. It involves many people and spans the globe.
