Mike Pence's sexuality
Pence's sexuality is something I've avoided looking at until now because I don't think all of the snark on social media about him being closeted is appropriate. I believe that assuming men are closeted because they're homophobic is a form of homophobia in itself.
Most of the time it's just because people are ignorant, hateful, and fear diversity and things they don't understand. Throw in Fox News, Evangelism, toxic masculinity, and it becomes a nasty brew of terribleness.
I don't know what prompted me to finally ask. I didn't have any intention of sharing this. Then today I saw a headline on Twitter that says, Pence Attends Service Claiming that the Devil Causes Homosexuality.
See here:
I suddenly remembered the Devil came up for crossing energy in the spread I did, and decided to take another look. So here I am blogging that reading. And I do think this is a pretty clear yes.
Right in the center is some major stuff for Pence. So many meanings could be attributed to that Tower that it's hard to nail down just one. There's lies and deceit which are reinforced by the 5 and 7 of Swords. There's the Pandora's box aspect, which he could feel like he'd be opening if he acted on his natural inclinations. There's the clinging to old negative patterns which he does by thumping his Bible and being a homophobe.
The Devil is so plain here. He's so deeply entrenched in his religion that he truly believes it causes homosexuality. It doesn't matter how he came to be like this. I've seen readers say in the past that his parents were extremely religious and raised him that way. This is usually their reasoning for, "well no he's not homosexual; he's just deeply religious because his parents raised him that way."
The thing is, they're not mutually exclusive. He can be both raised by religious parents and be homosexual. The result is someone who's so deep in the closet he's now in Narnia, and he's homophobic. This is a man who's not going to accept himself the way he is. He denies it with everything he has and seeks to destroy it. In that sense the Devil also means he feels chained to it and wants to break free.
The King of Cups at the root of it is another clue. I purposely keep cards upright, but it's describing the repression aspect that might be seen in the reverse. It feels to me like the meaning it takes on with the Strength card. On the other hand, this is a man who has romantic feelings. Since the question is about his sexuality, these feelings are for men. He's not just physically attracted to them. He feels love.
The 5 of Swords describes someone who's fighting and sabotaging himself. The 7 of Swords suggests perhaps that despite this, he sneaks around from time to time. Or it could just be saying he's sneaking around merely by having a wife and pretend to be something that he's not. Strength here feels like repressing or suppressing his urges. Taming them, so to speak.
Overall this is a man who not only seeks to destroy the way nature made him, but to blot out all homosexuality, probably because he thinks he'll be less tempted to sin if temptation isn't everywhere.
